The Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look brought in over six figures in paid subscribers for Netflix.
According to data provided by Ampere Analysis via gamesindustry.biz, the GTA VI Extended Look saw Netflix gain over 100,000 sign-ups in the USA during the 6 hours of exclusivity on August 27th. If all hundred thousand or so people bought the lowest tier, Netflix made around $1m from the exclusivity. This was pre-price hike. It is unknown if Netflix paid (and how much) Rockstar for this exclusivity as Rockstar were the ones who approached the streaming service about it.
We previously learned how many people watched when it went live and during those first few hours but in terms of sign ups, it was less lucrative than other content. Ampere Analysis reveals that this was the 3rd biggest surge in new subscribers this year behind both the Rousey vs. Carano MMA fight and final season of Stranger Things.
Ampere Analysis has data which reveals around 5% of of viewers who had not used Netflix in the past 30 days returned to watch the Extended Look before viewing other content. They also note that this level of reactivation was a far higher rate than any other series or film on the platform during the same time frame.
The game also led to around 100,000 pre-orders of the game and increased sales of PlayStation and Xbox consoles by over a third. Investors in Take-Two felt that the pre-order numbers were not as high as they should have been for such a tentpole event.
